What is the “Journey Wall” exercise?
God is at work in our church and always has been. The “Journey Wall” is a way to see this reality in graphic form. When completed, it will represent a timeline history of the church in the form of Post-It notes and written insights along the wall of our church. It provides insight into the values of our church, both actual and aspirational, and lays a foundation for prayerful consideration of future ministry endeavors.
The Journey Wall exercise helps us gain greater clarity and insight into the culture of our church through a constructive congregational process open to anyone who wished to participate.
Participants sit at tables of 6-8 and list significant events in the life of the church on Post-It notes. These notes are placed on a timeline set up on a wall in the room, and then a guided discussion takes place to work through the major eras in the life of the church, the values that are demonstrated, and where God may be leading the church in the future based on how He has led the church in the past. Along the way, the exercise is marked by prayer, as participants thank God for His provision and ask Him for insight. If issues arise, the exercise turns again to prayer, asking God to help participants deal with the issues. And as God gives direction for the future, we pray for the things that will need to change to bring it about. Follow-up materials will help our church leaders maximize on the insights that are produced.
The Journey Wall exercise gives valuable congregational input into the search process, and serves as a foundation for the beginning of a new chapter of ministry.
The exercise will be conducted by our district superintendent, Glen Schrieber.
